Research summaryDr. Turenne’s research includes understanding the epidemiology and diagnosis of novel and emerging bacteria (including nontuberculous mycobacteria) associated with human disease, evaluating diagnostic testing methods and approaches for community and healthcare-associated infections, and untangling the complexities of bacterial taxonomy.
BiographyDr. Christine Turenne is a clinical microbiologist for Shared Health Diagnostic Services in Winnipeg, Canada, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Manitoba.
Dr. Turenne previously worked in public health laboratories (both Provincial and Federal level) in three provinces, first at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg and then at the Public Health Ontario Laboratory in Toronto, both focusing on diagnostic approaches for tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria. In between, she pursued a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at McGill University, studying mycobacterial evolution and genomics. She then became the Director of Bacteriology at the Saskatchewan Disease Control Laboratory in Regina, with a focus on Biosafety Level 3 pathogens, until her return back home to Winnipeg in 2015.
Dr. Turenne is a Fellow of the Canadian College of Microbiology (CCM) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM). She was co-chair of the Scientific Planning Committee for the AMMI Canada-CACMID Annual conference on clinical microbiology and infectious diseases from 2016 to 2021. She is currently an editor of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and a section editor of the Manual of Clinical Microbiology (ASM).
