Research summary
Dr. Bullard has produced seminal and internationally recognized research defining SARS-CoV-2 infectivity from diagnostic samples including in the pediatric population. This has been used by the WHO, US CDC and UK public health as evidence to guide isolation procedures for patients with COVID-19. Dr. Bullard has also taken the local Manitoba experiences with syphilis to guide syphilis diagnostics and approaches to congenital syphilis at the national level. He continues to work as the provincial representative for CPARG.
Biography
Dr. Jared Bullard was born in Nassau, Bahamas and moved to Winnipeg with his family when he was quite young. After completing a BSc (4 years) from the University of Winnipeg in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology he had 6 months to travel before returning to start a MSc with the HIV Immunology group at the University of Manitoba. That same year he was accepted to the Faculty of Medicine. He completed a BSc (Medicine) in HIV Immunology during Medical School. After receiving his MD, Dr. Bullard remained in Manitoba completing specialties in Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology. He is currently the Section Head and consultant for Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital and serves as a liaison to the Manitoba HIV Program for both Pediatrics and Laboratory Medicine. He is also the Associate Medical Director at Cadham Provincial Laboratory, the Public Health Laboratory for the province of Manitoba. His professional interests include pediatric HIV, sexually transmitted and blood borne infection (STBBI) prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT), STBBI testing and provincial patterns of use, advance diagnostics in the immunocompromised host and medical education. Since 2020 and the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Bullard has provided leadership and expertise to control and define this novel pathogen. His personal interests include his family (wife Dr. Pamela Skrabek, daughter Taya and son Donovan), travelling and high level sarcasm.
