Research summaryDr. Amrita Bharat aims to understand the dissemination of antibiotic resistance and antifungal resistance in Canadians. She uses whole genome sequencing of human clinical isolates to illuminate the epidemiology and mechanisms of resistance in Candida species as well as enteric bacteria. These studies can inform antimicrobial stewardship policies and improve infection prevention and control in healthcare facilities. Dr. Bharat is also interested in prediction of antibiotic and antifungal resistance from whole genome sequences.
BiographyDr. Amrita Bharat is Head of Mycology and Molecular Enteric AMR at the National Microbiology Laboratory. She has an appointment as an Adjunct professor in the Dept of Medical Microbiology at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Bharat completed her PhD at McMaster University in 2012, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Microbiology Laboratory in 2016. She is currently using genomics to understand the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance in Gram-negative enteric pathogens and antifungal resistance in Candida species.
Education
PhD in Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, McMaster University (2012)
NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, National Microbiology Laboratory (2016)
